 How to Network blog new

Below we have put together some of the most common networking mistakes and offer advice of how best to avoid them.

  • You let other colleagues attend networking events rather than going yourself - We would advise that in order for you to build a meaningful network you need to attend as many of these events in person. You risk missing valuable networking opportunities that may present themselves if you do not go.

  • You do not attend the networking reception directly before the business function - always give yourself plenty of time to arrive early at the function. This will allow you be relaxed so you will be more willing to talk to the other guests, and more importantly will give you an idea of who you would like to speak to and swap details with.

  • You only network with similar people in your circle - never just limit yourself to people who are at your industry level and experience, but rather people from varying levels and industries.Opportunities may present themselves from unexpected areas which you may have previously overlooked.

  • Not approaching social occasions as an opportunity to network - you need to realise that there will be opportunities for you to build up your contacts in a less formal setting. Holiday’s and parties are a great way to meet new people, remember to always have your business cards to hand if the right opportunity presents itself.

  • Failing to be upfront and honest with people at a networking event - remember never to hide your true intensions at an event. People will respond better and will be more willing to offer help, if they know for example you are looking for a new job opportunity. Prepare beforehand a very short sales pitch to further enhance your intensions.

  • Being rude and over assertive - while you may have an agenda at such an event, you need to remain tactful and polite so that you do not make a nuisance of yourself. On meeting a new contact shake hands firmly and introduce yourself, afterwards exchange business cards and thank them for their time.

  • Forgetting to write down important key information - always take a pen and notepad, so if you need to write down any issues discussed you can after meeting and exchanging business cards with a new contact.

People network for a number of reasons and it is important for you to always be proactive in your search for new business opportunities, no matter what they are. You never know how maintaining and building upon your network my lead to a new job, even if you are not looking for a career change. Networking as a great way for professionals to share valuable insights as well as for you to stay current with industry happenings.
